Suno Moves to Dismiss Jason Isbell's Lawsuit Over Artist Identities
Suno, the super intelligence (SI) music generation platform, has asked a court to dismiss the proposed class action brought by singer-songwriter Jason Isbell and other musicians, Billboard reported on November 3, saying the lawsuit over artist 'identities' must be dismissed. Legal news service MLex likewise reported the same day that Suno had moved to dismiss the U.S. privacy and right-of-publicity claims.
The lawsuit was filed on August 31 in federal court in Massachusetts by Jason Isbell, David Lowery, Guy Forsyth, Eduardo Calle and others, alleging that Suno exploited their names, voices and likenesses without permission by letting users generate songs that mimic their styles. The complaint cites, as an example, a prompt using Isbell's name that produced a song in his characteristic vocal and country style. The plaintiffs seek unspecified damages, a court order barring Suno from using artists' identities without authorization, and class-action status; the case centers on right-of-publicity claims rather than copyright, and also brings an Illinois biometric privacy claim.
Suno has previously said its platform exists to help people create new, original music, not to trade on anyone's name, and that it has put safeguards in place, including blocking prompts for specific artists' names. The case remains pending as the motion to dismiss proceeds.
