Monterey Park

Monterey Park Police Conduct Hands-Free Cellphone Law Enforcement Operation on Nov. 3
Monterey Park, Los Angeles County, California — The Monterey Park Police Department said in a city news flash on November 3 that it would conduct an enforcement operation that day focused on drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cellphone law.
Under current law, drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or electronic communications device while operating a vehicle, including talking, texting or using an app, police said. Using a handheld cellphone while driving is punishable by a fine. Violating the hands-free law for a second time within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense will result in a point being added to a driver's record.
"A driver's focus should be on the road, not their phone," Monterey Park Chief of Police Scott Wiese said. "That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road." Police advised drivers who have an important phone call or need to program directions to pull over to a safe parking spot, and to silence their phone before driving or put it somewhere they cannot reach.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the city said. The media contact is Sergeant Jay Silverman of the Monterey Park Police Department.
