USDA Awards $250,000 to Expand North Carolina Meat Processing: Greene Grain Cattle to Buy Wastewater, Packaging and Slaughter Equipment
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Brooke L. Rollins announced that USDA is moving forward with a $250,000 investment to help a North Carolina meat processor improve wastewater management, expand processing capacity, enhance packaging quality and increase worker safety at its livestock processing facility. USDA Rural Development's North Carolina office released the announcement on November 3, naming Greene Grain Cattle LLC as the recipient.
Greene Grain Cattle will use the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP) grant to purchase wastewater pumping equipment for on-site land application of treated wastewater, a rollstock packaging machine and film labeler to improve packaging efficiency and shelf life, and slaughter equipment including carcass hoists, a hide puller and transfer equipment.
The award follows the announcement by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary Rollins of $57 million in MPPEP investments across 40 states. With the congressional notification period now complete, USDA is beginning to obligate the funds to strengthen America's domestic meat processing capacity and supply chain.
MPPEP is managed by USDA Rural Development's Rural Business-Cooperative Service and provides grants to help eligible independent processors expand their capacity. USDA designed the program to encourage competition and sustainable growth in the United States meat processing sector and improve supply chain resiliency.
USDA has awarded more than $200 million to independent businesses under the MPPEP program, and the projects have created thousands of jobs across the country.
