Kansas Election Day: Voters Decide a Citizen-Only Voting Amendment and Five Contested Topeka House Races
Kansas polls were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on November 3, and Shawnee County voters in Topeka had to show valid ID; early voting ended at noon on November 2. Five incumbent state representatives in the Topeka area faced challengers, including Republican Jesse Borjon against retired professor Tony Scaglia in District 52 and Republican Ken Corbet against Chris Tanner in District 54. In District 55, Democrat Tobias Schlingensiepen faced Shawnee County Republican chair Ranell Griffith; in District 56, Democrat Virgil Weigel faced Elvin Fajardo; and Democrat Alexis Simmons faced Michael Matthewson in a rematch of 2024. The races matter for whether Republicans keep their two-thirds House majority, held since 2010; state Senate seats were not on this ballot except in special elections. Statewide, voters decided a constitutional amendment that would change 'every citizen' to provide that no person may be deemed a qualified elector unless a U.S. citizen, 18 or older and a resident of the voting area. Supporters said it closes a loophole for noncitizen local voting; critics noted no local government currently allows noncitizens to vote. In the governor's race, Democrat Cindy Holsher against Republican Ty Masterson was moved by a ratings outlet from 'lean Republican' to 'toss-up' on Election Day.
