Florida's Governor and Senate Races Stay Close as AAPI Voters Grow 70% in a Decade
Florida voters went to the polls on November 3 to choose a new governor, a U.S. senator and all of the state's U.S. House members, with precincts closing at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern. The governor's seat was open because Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is term-limited: Republican Byron Donalds faced Democrat David Jolly. In the Senate race, Republican Sen. Ashley Moody faced Democrat Angie Nixon. Final polling was not uniform: a University of North Florida survey conducted October 12-19 showed Donalds leading only 49-47 and Moody leading 49-45, both near the margin of error. Forecasters rated the governor's race as leaning Republican while noting that Florida's recent Republican advantage has narrowed in some surveys. Asian American and Pacific Islander voters are a growing factor: according to joint research by APIAVote and AAPI Data, Florida's AAPI electorate grew 70.26% between 2014 and 2024, and Orange County's Asian population share is 6.7%, near the national level; national polling found 90% of registered AAPI voters planned to vote in the 2026 midterms.
