Colorado Sees a Record 1.6 Million Ballots Returned Early, Led by Unaffiliated Voters
November 3 was Election Day in Colorado. Vote centers were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and all ballots had to reach county clerks by 7 p.m.; postmarks do not count. Voters who missed the mail deadline could still drop off a mail ballot at an official drop box or vote in person at a vote center, and eligible residents could register the same day. Pueblo County offered 15 drop boxes and 10 in-person vote centers. Secretary of State Jena Griswold said on November 2 that more than 1.6 million ballots had been returned as of November 1, ahead of the pace four years ago and pointing to a possible record midterm turnout. Unaffiliated voters returned the most ballots at 685,000, followed by Democrats at 494,000 and Republicans at 388,000; by share of their own electorates, about 50% of Democrats, 44% of Republicans and 33% of unaffiliated voters had returned ballots. Griswold urged voters to make a plan and return ballots promptly, noting that 98.5% of returned ballots came by mail. The ballot included governor, attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer, a U.S. Senate seat, eight U.S. House seats and several constitutional amendments. Results begin after polls close at 7 p.m., and voters can track their ballots with BallotTrax.
