能源部向爱达荷州及地方官员展示核废料清理进展
美国能源部11月3日发布消息说，爱达荷州议员与东爱达荷州的地方及地区官员近日参观了爱达荷清理项目，了解清理工作如何在履行1995年《爱达荷州和解协议》承诺的同时保护民众与环境。参观者亲眼看到，工作人员正在从一处冷战时期的填埋场中挖出有针对性的埋藏遗留废料，以降低对地下蛇河平原含水层的风险；这些废料经过包装、认证后，将运往新墨西哥州的废料隔离中试厂作永久处置。参观团还走访了爱达荷核技术与工程中心，工作人员演示了历史燃料后处理产生的乏核燃料如何在室内外储存区得到安全存放。近年来，清理团队已实现协议下的一项里程碑，把乏核燃料从湿式储存转移到更安全的干式储存，为日后送往场外处置库做准备，也为爱达荷国家实验室的科研工作提供支持。爱达荷清理项目经理尼克·鲍尔斯迈尔表示，这类参观让能源部有机会当面展示爱达荷清理工作的成效，表明能源部一直在认真履行职责，他同时感谢社区的持续支持。

Department of Energy Shows Idaho State and Local Officials Nuclear Waste Cleanup Progress
The U.S. Department of Energy said on November 3 that Idaho state legislators and local and regional officials from eastern Idaho recently toured the Idaho Cleanup Project to see how the cleanup protects people and the environment while meeting the commitments of the 1995 Idaho Settlement Agreement. The visitors saw crews exhuming targeted buried legacy waste from a Cold War-era burial ground to reduce risk to the underlying Snake River Plain Aquifer; the waste is packaged and certified, then shipped to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico for permanent disposal.
The group also visited the Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center, where workers demonstrated how used nuclear fuel from historic fuel reprocessing is safely held in indoor and outdoor storage areas. In recent years, cleanup crews reached a milestone under the agreement by transferring used nuclear fuel from wet storage to safer dry storage, preparing it for an offsite repository and supporting research at Idaho National Laboratory. Idaho Cleanup Project Manager Nick Balsmeier said tours like this let the Energy Department show the results of the Idaho cleanup firsthand and demonstrate that the department takes its responsibilities seriously, and he thanked the community for its continued support.
