Detroit Opens All 402 Polling Places as Clerk Reports About 68,000 Absentee Ballots Counted
All 402 polling places in Detroit, in Michigan's Wayne County, opened on November 3, 2026, for midterm Election Day voting. City Clerk Janice Winfrey said about 68,000 absentee ballots had been tabulated by that morning, with up to 80,000 absentee ballots expected in total; about 25,500 Detroit residents had also voted during the early voting period.
Absentee ballot tabulation was set to resume at noon at Huntington Place. Ballots from the city's 38 official drop boxes had to arrive by the 8 p.m. deadline and pass signature verification before sorting and transport, with as many as five deliveries planned during the day. 'Our focus remains on providing an orderly, accessible voting experience and ensuring every eligible ballot is counted accurately,' Winfrey said. She expected the first results at 8:30 p.m., half an hour after polls closed, with results from roughly 90 to 95 percent of ballots by 11 p.m.
Michigan's Secretary of State said more than 2.3 million people statewide had voted early, 31.2 percent of active registered voters, including more than 743,000 in-person early ballots and more than 1.5 million absentee ballots. Twenty-six two-person U.S. Department of Justice monitor teams were also at Detroit polling places that day, and the clerk said congressional observers were expected as well.
