NYC Subway Sets All-Time Sunday Record With 3.14 Million Riders
NEW YORK — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced on November 2 that New York City's subway set a series of ridership records over the Halloween and New York City Marathon weekend. On Sunday, November 1, the subway carried 3.14 million riders, an all-time record for a Sunday and 11 percent higher than the same day last year.
On Halloween, Saturday, October 31, ridership reached 3.59 million, the highest Saturday total since the pandemic and the busiest Saturday since 2016. On Thursday, October 29, the subway carried 4.72 million riders, a post-pandemic single-day record, up 9.7 percent year over year. In the preceding week, the five weekdays from October 19 to 23 drew 22.32 million riders, a post-pandemic weekday high, and the full seven-day week totaled 27.87 million.
Governor Kathy Hochul and the MTA acknowledged, in announcing the records, that many riders complain about overcrowded platforms and train delays. The agency said the record ridership shows strong travel demand among New Yorkers but also puts pressure on system capacity. On Election Day, November 3, New York City polling places stayed open until 9 p.m., and the subway remained the main way many voters reached their polling sites.
