Fulton County Proposes Public Rescan of 1,069 Advance Ballots After Two Scanner Failures
ATLANTA, Georgia — Fulton County election officials announced on November 3 that 1,069 ballots may need to be rescanned after two ballot scanners failed during advance voting, and that they will ask the county Board of Registration and Elections to approve the step.
In a statement issued that day, the Fulton County government said two ICP scanners at two advance voting locations experienced equipment failures, and that the county's director of Registration and Elections had notified the elections division of the Georgia Secretary of State's Office. The state voting systems division then recommended corrective action, which may include rescanning the affected ballots. The 1,069 ballots are a small fraction of the more than 328,000 ballots cast during advance voting.
The county emphasized that the proposal required approval by the Board of Registration and Elections at its 6:30 p.m. meeting that day, and that, if approved, the rescan would be conducted in public view to ensure transparency. Fulton County is the core county of the Atlanta metropolitan area; Georgia polling places statewide were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. The proposed rescan covers only ballots affected by the equipment failures and is not a recount. All results remain unofficial until certification.
