Ballots Run Out at Several Chicago Polling Places, Forcing Long Waits
CHICAGO, Illinois — Several Chicago polling places ran out of paper ballots during Election Day voting on November 3, leaving voters in long lines. According to Block Club Chicago, the polling place at Goudy Elementary School, at 5120 Winthrop Avenue in the Far North Side, had exhausted its 50 paper ballots for 48th Ward voters before 8:15 a.m.; voters had to line up for a single electronic voting machine, sharply lengthening waits. Election judge Adam Hornack confirmed the situation.
Two precincts at Goethe Elementary School in Logan Square also ran out of ballots at around 9 a.m., with resupplies arriving at about 1 p.m.; First Ward Alderman Daniel La Spata said he had never heard of a polling place running out of ballots in his time in office. At the Rockwell on the River site, Precinct 17 of the 35th Ward, voters waited up to an hour between noon and 5 p.m. Election officials then printed and distributed additional ballots, particularly for overlapping districts requiring multiple ballot versions.
Despite the problems, turnout in Chicago was strong: by 6 p.m. on November 3, nearly 334,000 ballots had been cast at Chicago polling places. Chicago polls were open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., voters in line by 7 p.m. could still vote, and mail ballots postmarked by November 3 will be counted.
