Connecticut Marks November 3 as One Health Day, Linking Human, Animal and Environmental Health
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont proclaimed November 3 as One Health Day in Connecticut, emphasizing that human health, animal health and environmental health are closely linked, state officials in Hartford said. The Department of Public Health, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the One Health approach is applied to rabies, mosquito-borne diseases, avian influenza, food safety and antimicrobial resistance. Public Health Commissioner Dr. Manisha Juthani said the three agencies work closely together in their daily operations, approaching shared health risks from different angles.
The state also described climate-related health pressures: Connecticut recorded 17 days this summer exceeding ozone standards and activated its extreme hot weather protocol three times this year, and health officials are reviewing this season's heat-related illness data to guide future prevention. Officials said One Health Day is meant to help the public understand the connections among environmental, animal and human health, and to keep food safety, mosquito protection and heat precautions in everyday view.
