Follow-up: Nearly 1,200 Chicago Parking Workers Begin Strike
At 5:30 a.m. on November 3, members of Teamsters Local 727, which represents parking workers across the Chicago area, began a strike at parking facilities serving O'Hare Airport, McCormick Place, Hyatt hotels and other sites. Chicago is in Cook County, Illinois. The union said the walkout is an unfair labor practice strike involving nearly 1,200 parking employees citywide.
The contract between the union and the Chicago Parking Association expired last Friday, and the union said 98 percent of voting members authorized the strike, citing bad-faith bargaining and multiple alleged violations of federal labor law. Union members have staffed parking facilities across Chicago, including Navy Pier, for decades, and the union is asking the public to honor its picket lines. It has written to the governor, the state attorney general and other officials asking them not to cross a picket line should the strike expand to Navy Pier. The union stressed that the action targets the parking operators' bargaining conduct and seeks a return to the table and a fair contract.
The strike comes as the Chicago City Council faces a December 31 deadline to pass a new budget, and parking revenue has recently been a focus of council debate. The union said the action is unrelated to the budget and is about workers' rights. As of publication, the operators had not announced a new bargaining schedule, the strike's impact on airport and downtown parking remained to be seen, and the union advised drivers to plan their trips ahead.
