Pennsylvania Opens 2026-27 LIHEAP Season: Cash Grants Up to $1,000 for Heating Costs, Applications Through April 23, 2027
The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) announced that the 2026-27 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) season is now open and is scheduled to run through April 23, 2027. LIHEAP helps eligible Pennsylvanians keep their homes warm and safe during the coldest months of the year by providing cash and crisis grants for heating and fuel costs.
Cash grants range from $200 to $1,000, with one cash grant per household per season. Payments are sent directly to the household's utility or fuel provider and do not need to be repaid. Both homeowners and renters may apply, and households do not need to be behind on their bills to receive a cash grant.
Residents who are in danger of having their heating service terminated, have already had it terminated, or are out of, or have less than two weeks' worth of, deliverable fuel such as fuel oil, propane, coal or wood may also be eligible for a crisis grant. Crisis grants run from $25 to $1,000, and households that face more than one emergency in a season may receive more than one, up to the $1,000 maximum.
Households are financially eligible if their income is at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level: a gross income of $23,940 a year for an individual and $49,500 a year for a family of four. Households approved or denied in a previous year are encouraged to apply again.
Pennsylvanians can apply online through COMPASS, request a paper application by calling the LIHEAP Helpline at 1-866-857-7095, or apply through their county assistance office. When applying, households can also choose to have their information shared directly with their utility company to help enroll in reduced-bill, debt-forgiveness and other utility assistance programs.
