Santa Monica Pier's Seventh Annual Día de los Muertos Celebration Closes Sunday, Honoring Mexican Cinema Icon Pedro Infante; Free to the Public
SANTA MONICA, California, November 1 — The City of Santa Monica is celebrating the cultural legacy of Mexican cinema icon Pedro Infante this weekend as the Santa Monica Pier presents its seventh annual Día de los Muertos celebration. The free, family-friendly event takes place Saturday, October 31, and Sunday, November 1, focusing on cultural rituals, heritage music and public remembrance inside and surrounding the historic Merry-Go-Round building.
Sunday's schedule, as published by the organizers, runs as follows: from noon, vintage vehicles roll onto the pier boardwalk for an afternoon display continuing until 5:30 p.m.; face painting and community altars open inside the Merry-Go-Round building at noon, where visitors may place pictures of departed relatives on shared ofrendas adorned with marigolds and papel picado. Ritual observances commence at 1 p.m. with an Aztec blessing ceremony at the ocean-facing west deck, leading into a dancer-escorted procession toward the carousel facility. Santa Monica Ballet Folklórico takes the floor at 2 p.m. with regional dances, followed by a collaborative mariachi and dance program at 3 p.m. Ambassador Carlos González Gutiérrez, Mexico's Consul General in Los Angeles, offers ceremonial remarks at 4 p.m. Musical ensemble Brotherhood performs an outdoor stage concert at 4:30 p.m. to conclude the festivities. Saturday's public access ran from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with art exhibits and shared ofrendas inside the carousel rotunda.
The celebration is supported in part by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors via the Department of Arts and Culture, with sponsorship from Kaiser Permanente, Northgate Market, Pacific Park, Playland Arcade and Woodlawn Cemetery.
