Oilers Beat Rangers 4-1: McDavid Scores in 50 Seconds and Sets Two Records in Seventh Straight Road Win
NEW YORK: Connor McDavid scored 50 seconds into the game and set two records as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the New York Rangers 4-1 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, November 1, for their seventh straight road win.
McDavid took a pass from Evan Bouchard at his own blue line, skated the length of the ice and lifted the puck over Dylan Garand's glove for his eighth career opening-minute goal, passing Mark Messier's Oilers record. He extended his season-opening point streak to 15 games.
In the second period, McDavid assisted on Bouchard's power-play goal that made it 3-0, pushing his NHL-record season-opening assist streak to 15 games and reaching 30 assists in 15 games, faster than anyone in league history, breaking Wayne Gretzky's mark of 16 games set in 1984-85. McDavid leads the NHL with nine goals, 30 assists and 39 points, ahead of teammates Leon Draisaitl (28) and Bouchard (26).
Colton Dach scored at 6:19 of the first period and added an empty-net goal at 19:20 of the third for his first career two-goal game. Matt Tomkins made 28 saves in his Oilers debut for his fourth career NHL win.
Pavel Dorofeyev scored the Rangers' only goal at 13:22 of the second period, and Garand made 21 saves. New York (7-7-1) lost its fourth straight. Edmonton (11-2-2) is 7-0-0 on the road and visits the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. (GSM, via NHL.com)
