A First in 143 Years at the Met: 'Lincoln in the Bardo' Runs Through Nov. 14
The Metropolitan Opera in New York City gave the world premiere of 'Lincoln in the Bardo' on October 19 — the first opera by a woman composer to premiere at the house in its 143-year history. The run continues through November 14 for nine performances; the November 11 performance will be broadcast live on the Met's SiriusXM channel and streamed in audio on its website.
'Lincoln in the Bardo' was composed by Missy Mazzoli with a libretto by Royce Vavrek, adapted from George Saunders's Booker Prize-winning 2017 novel. Set during the Civil War, it follows President Lincoln on a night visit to a Georgetown cemetery where his 11-year-old son Willie has just been buried, in a liminal 'bardo' between the living and the dead. The work was commissioned by the Met, which made Mazzoli one of the first women it ever commissioned.
Lileana Blain-Cruz directs; Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts, except on October 31 and November 14, when Steven Osgood takes the podium. Baritone Peter Mattei sings Lincoln, with Christine Goerke, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, Stephanie Blythe and Ryan McKinny among the principals.
The Met's 2026–27 season opened September 22 with a new 'Macbeth.' Puccini's 'Tosca' returned on November 1, and a new production of Janáček's 'Jenůfa' opens November 16.
