BYU Hold Off Arizona State 27-20: Cougars Answer a Third-Quarter Tie With 10 Fourth-Quarter Points
BYU edged Arizona State 27-20 on October 31 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, surviving a 14-point third-quarter rally after leading 17-3 at halftime and scoring the first 10 points of the fourth quarter.
BYU struck first off a turnover: on the opening drive of his first career start, Arizona State freshman quarterback Jake Fette was sacked and fumbled, and six plays later Sione Moa recovered a fumble at the goal line and punched it in from a yard out. Bachmeier's 13-yard touchdown pass to Kyler Kasper made it 17-3 at the half, with BYU allowing just 93 yards and recording six sacks before halftime.
Arizona State tied it in the third: Fette threw a 20-yard touchdown to Omarion Miller, Owen Long forced a fumble that the Sun Devils recovered deep in BYU territory, and Fette's 1-yard pass to Anthony Miller Jr. made it 17-17. In the fourth, Matthias Dunn's 45-yard field goal put BYU ahead for good, Bachmeier converted two fourth downs on the sealing drive — including a 53-yard completion — and Moa scored from a yard out with 2:09 left. Carson Smith's 44-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining cut it to one score, but BYU recovered the onside kick.
Bachmeier finished 19 of 30 for 236 yards and a touchdown; Fette went 22 of 42 for 166 yards and two touchdowns; Cardae Mack ran 23 times for 123 yards and totaled 170 all-purpose yards for Arizona State. BYU improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12; Arizona State fell to 4-4 and 2-3, losing on the road to a top-10 opponent for the third time this season. (Reporting from Field Level Media)
