Johnny Lopez, a Founding TMZ Writer Who Created Several of the Site's Signature Franchises, Dies at 55
Johnny Lopez, one of the writers who helped launch TMZ.com and shape the irreverent voice that became synonymous with the site, has died at 55, TMZ announced on October 31. The site did not disclose a cause of death.
Lopez was at TMZ in its early days and was instrumental in developing the unique tone that set the site apart. He created many of the franchises the site still uses today, including 'Memba Them?, 'Who'd You Rather', 'Good Genes or Good Docs?' and 'We're Just Sayin'.
He also worked for Access Hollywood, Queerty, People, Outsports and Dish Nation. TMZ described him as a beloved member of its family, someone whose personality was every bit as memorable as the stories he wrote.
Lopez was a passionate advocate for LGBTQ rights and a devoted Madonna fan. The Men's Health Foundation was a cause close to his heart, and TMZ said those wishing to honor his memory can make a donation to the organization, according to TMZ.
