Bay Area King Tides Keep Flooding Roads as Coastal Advisory Runs Through Sunday Evening in Marin County
Mill Valley, Marin County, California — King tides continued to hit the Bay Area coast, and the National Weather Service extended its coastal flood advisory through November 1. The advisory covers the California coast from Santa Rosa to Monterey, with flooding around San Pablo Bay, San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay expected to last until 6 p.m. on November 1; water in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways could reach 1.9 feet above ground level. The weather service warned people not to drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
Marin County, sitting between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, is among the counties most prone to this flooding, and its public works department said the goal is to have roughly 45,000 sandbags ready over the coming weeks. November 1 would be at least the seventh straight day of high-tide flooding in the region; aerial footage showed flooded roads and backyards, with water partially submerging a football field.
Reports attributed the severity in part to a stronger-than-usual El Niño raising sea levels on top of winter storm surge. Roads in Mill Valley were already flooded at high tide on October 29, and residents called it among the worst flooding they had experienced.
