Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — The Philadelphia Union lost 1-0 on the road to FC Cincinnati in MLS regular-season play on October 31, a result that clinched a playoff berth for Cincinnati. The game's only goal came in the 70th minute from Cincinnati's Ayoub Jabbari, and Philadelphia could not find an equalizer. Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano made a series of saves to preserve the win.
The victory moved Cincinnati to 12 wins, 11 draws and 10 losses for 46 points and a fifth straight playoff appearance, all five under head coach Pat Noonan. Philadelphia stands at 13-12-8 for 47 points, still sixth in the Eastern Conference, but has now been shut out in two straight matches and seven times in league play this season.
Cincinnati next hosts Nashville on November 7, while Philadelphia needs a better finish in its finale to avoid the single-game wild-card match on November 18, in which the East's eighth and ninth seeds play for one playoff spot; Cincinnati's win keeps it out of the wild-card game.
