Nashville, Tennessee, Grocery Tax Cut Takes Effect November 1: About $72 a Year Per Household, Roughly $9 Million Citywide
In Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, the city announced on October 30 that Nashville's half-cent grocery tax cut will take effect on November 1, making grocery trips a little less pricey for residents.
The tax cut was approved in June as part of the city's annual budget process. With the cut, Nashvillians will pay about 22 percent less in grocery tax, which Mayor Freddie O'Connell's office estimates at roughly $72 per year in grocery bill savings per household and upwards of a cumulative $9 million in direct economic relief citywide. O'Connell told reporters on October 30 that the city hopes to use a variety of simple approaches to make everyday necessities easier to afford and support people as they move toward greater economic security.
The statewide 4 percent grocery tax remains in place, however. Efforts in the General Assembly to reduce or eliminate the state tax did not pass in the 2026 session, when none of the roughly eight such bills was enacted. O'Connell said the city will continue to appeal to state lawmakers to consider reducing the grocery tax statewide, rather than forcing local governments to make these tough choices.
