Oklahoma City Approves Its First Hyperscale Data Center on 284 Acres; Mayor Says It Does Not Mean the City Is Open for More
In Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the city council this week approved the city's first hyperscale data center, while city leaders stressed that the approval does not mean more such projects will follow, according to a report published October 31.
Developer Beltline Energy spent months negotiating with city leaders to address community concerns. Mayor David Holt said the process has been unique and arduous and that he is skeptical the same model can be replicated across the city, so the public should understand that approving this one project does not mean Oklahoma City is open for business for data centers.
The 284-acre facility is planned for Canadian County, at the border between southwest Oklahoma City and Yukon. Ward 3 Councilwoman Katrina Avers, who represents the area, spearheaded the city's discussions with Beltline. She said she was satisfied with the requirements for the project and expects the facility to help school districts and the county through ad valorem taxes without straining existing infrastructure too much.
Oklahoma City has implemented a moratorium on zoning decisions for large data centers, set to expire at the end of the year. Beltline's project was exempt because its zoning plan was filed in August 2025, before the moratorium was approved.
