Culture: Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp Opens Zadkine Exhibition: 130 Works Trace the Sculptor's Belgian Ties
The exhibition Ossip Zadkine and Belgium, presented by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) in collaboration with the Musée Zadkine in Paris, opened on October 31 and runs through April 18, 2027. Tickets are available through the museum's website.
Ossip Zadkine was born in Vitebsk in 1888 and died in Paris in 1967. Marking 60 years since his death, the exhibition brings together 130 works: 20 from the KMSKA collection, 50 on loan from the Musée Zadkine, and 60 from other museums and private lenders in Belgium and abroad, spanning sculpture, works on paper and archival documents. Curated by Véronique Van Passel, it also includes works by his wife Valentine Prax and by Belgian contemporaries and pupils.
Zadkine's Belgian ties run deep: his first retrospective in 1933 was held not in France but at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels; after the Second World War, an Antwerp shipping company brought his works back from New York to Europe; and he served, alongside Henry Moore, as an adviser to the new Middelheim Museum. The KMSKA holds nine works by Zadkine, including The Misery of Job, donated by the artist himself. An exhibition catalogue with more than 200 illustrations is published by Hannibal Books.
