Connecticut Mobile ID Launches November 18 and Will Be Accepted at Airport Security Checkpoints
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles has announced that Connecticut Mobile ID will officially launch on November 18. The department, headquartered in Wethersfield, in Hartford County, Connecticut, said the free app will be available through the Apple App Store and Google Play, giving residents a secure digital version of their driver's license or state identification card that can be used to verify identity and age from a mobile device.
Residents will need their existing physical license or ID card to complete the setup process. The DMV emphasizes that Mobile ID is designed to complement, not replace, a physical driver's license or ID card, and that residents should continue carrying their physical credential. Law enforcement will not accept Mobile ID as a substitute for a physical driver's license, and the digital credential cannot be used for voting or as a flash pass.
At launch, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will accept Connecticut Mobile ID at participating airport security checkpoints nationwide, including Bradley International Airport and Tweed New Haven Airport in Connecticut. The state Department of Consumer Protection will provide information over the next month to businesses and industry license holders that may choose to accept the digital credential; businesses will need a compatible verification app to validate it, but will not be required to accept it.
On privacy, the DMV says personal information is stored securely on the device itself rather than in the app, and that users can review what information a verifier is requesting and choose whether to approve or decline before anything is shared.
"Our administration has made it a priority to make state government more accessible and convenient to access by putting more services online and available through mobile devices. Digitizing IDs is another step forward in that effort," said Governor Ned Lamont. DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera called the launch a major milestone for the agency and said the state expects the program to develop as more businesses and organizations become able to verify the digital credentials. The Department of Administrative Services also took part in bringing Mobile ID to Connecticut.
