About 2,200 Fentanyl Pills Found in Car: Washington Man Munoz Sentenced to 3 Years and 5 Months for Trafficking Into Billings
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Montana announced that Zachary James Munoz, of Washington state, was sentenced on Thursday to three years and five months in prison, followed by four years of supervised release, for trafficking fentanyl into Billings. U.S. Attorney Scott Twito announced the sentence, imposed by U.S. District Judge William W. Mercer.
Munoz, 37, pleaded guilty in June 2026 to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. Prosecutors alleged he transported fentanyl from the Tri-Cities area of Washington to Billings, Montana, with a partner, Crystal Williamson-Burke, who pleaded guilty to trafficking charges last year and was sentenced in February 2026 to nearly four years in prison.
The case began with a wrong number. In early March 2025, Williamson-Burke called a wrong number and left a voicemail that tipped off law enforcement to her plan to drive to the Tri-Cities to pick up a package of fentanyl pills bound for Billings. Officers tracked her vehicle to Washington and stopped it on the way back; Munoz was in the passenger seat, and investigators found approximately 2,200 multicolored fentanyl pills in the vehicle.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Colin Rubich prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Eastern Montana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Taskforce.
