州流行病学家特蕾莎·索科尔表示，饮用自来水不被视为棘阿米巴感染风险，但自来水不应用于鼻腔冲洗，也不应拿来清洗或存放隐形眼镜。
10例感染中，8例为棘阿米巴角膜炎，即可能影响原本健康人群的眼部感染，可导致永久视力丧失；其中7例发生在隐形眼镜佩戴者中，5例造成永久视力丧失。2026年发现的两例重症感染中，一例影响鼻窦，一例影响大脑且致命，两名患者免疫系统均较弱，并报告曾在鼻腔冲洗器具中使用自来水。
卫生厅表示，已向全州医疗机构发布健康提示，以提高警觉与早期识别，并强化预防建议；隐形眼镜佩戴者应始终使用隐形眼镜护理液，而非自来水清洗与存放镜片。

Louisiana Reports Brain-Eating Amoeba in Tap Water on October 30: A Fatal Case in Homer, with Spread to Other Towns
In Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, the Louisiana Department of Health reminded residents on October 30 not to use tap water with nasal rinsing devices or contact lenses, after 10 rare Acanthamoeba infections were identified in the state since 2024.
State Epidemiologist Theresa Sokol said drinking tap water is not considered a risk for Acanthamoeba infection, but tap water should not be used for nasal rinsing or to clean or store contact lenses.
Of the 10 infections, eight were Acanthamoeba keratitis, an eye infection that can affect otherwise healthy people and cause permanent vision loss; seven occurred in contact lens wearers and five resulted in permanent vision loss. Two serious infections identified in 2026 — one affecting the sinuses and one involving the brain, which was fatal — were in patients with weakened immune systems who reported using tap water in nasal irrigation devices.
The department has issued a health advisory to medical facilities statewide to raise awareness and early recognition, and reminds contact lens wearers to always use contact lens solution rather than tap water.
