GSM News

California Attorney General Reaches $1.8 Million Settlement With Lyft Over Sale of User Data for Targeted Ads

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on October 29 a settlement under which ride-hailing company Lyft will pay $1.8 million in civil penalties. The Department of Justice said Lyft violated the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the Unfair Competition Law: beginning in mid-2023, Lyft sold or shared users' personal information for in-app targeted advertising without providing an opt-out option inside the app, forcing users to detour through a privacy-policy webpage and repeatedly re-enter their personal information.

The settlement requires Lyft to provide an in-app opt-out option and to notify consumers of their rights. It is the California DOJ's ninth CCPA enforcement action, following actions involving General Motors, Sephora, DoorDash and Disney, among others.

Bonta's office also highlighted the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP), through which Californians can send a single deletion request to more than 575 registered data brokers.
