Connecticut Breaks Ground on New Enfield Train Station: $125.3 Million Hartford Line Project Due in Fall 2030
Enfield, Connecticut — Governor Ned Lamont announced on October 28 that construction has officially begun on the new Enfield train station on the Hartford Line. The $125.3 million project is funded approximately 85% by the state and 15% by the federal government. The station will feature a 350-foot platform and about 80 parking spaces, is expected to be completed in the fall of 2030, and is projected to serve nearly 130,000 riders a year by 2031.
Under the plan released by the governor's office, trains from the new station will reach Hartford in about 23 minutes and Springfield in about 13 minutes, connecting the northern Connecticut town of Enfield to commuter and intercity rail service on the Hartford Line. Lamont and state Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said in the groundbreaking announcement that the new station will improve travel options for local residents and support development around the station.
U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and U.S. Representative Joe Courtney were among the elected officials who commented on the start of construction. The Enfield station is part of the Hartford Line station-building program along the corridor linking New Haven, Hartford, and Springfield, where the state has continued to invest state and federal funds in stations and capacity.
"Building this new station means better access to jobs and education, while creating new opportunities for housing, businesses, and private investment in Thompsonville," Lamont said. Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said the project is "closing a critical gap in the Hartford Line" by bringing passenger rail and local bus service together. The station will have a mostly enclosed waiting area, covered seating, wind screens, an electric snow-melting system for the platform, ramps and stairs, about 80 parking spaces with EV charging for roughly 15, and a bus area for two full-size buses connecting with Enfield’s Magic Carpet bus service. The project also replaces the Main Street railroad bridge, realigns about 4,400 feet of track, and adds a gauntlet track for oversized freight. "After 40 years, rail service is arriving in Enfield," said Senator Richard Blumenthal. Congressman Joe Courtney said his office worked with the town and the state DOT for more than fifteen years to restore the service, which ended in 1986; the station fills a roughly 15-mile gap between Springfield Union Station and Windsor Locks.
