Bay Area Real Estate CEO Sanjeev Acharya Sentenced to 18 Months for Defrauding Investors: More Than 20 Investors Lost Over $2.25 Million
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California announced that Sanjeev Acharya, 58, of San Jose, the President and CEO of SiliconSage Builders, was sentenced on October 28, 2026, in federal court in San Francisco to 18 months in federal prison for wire fraud and money laundering. U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer handed down the sentence. Acharya was also sentenced to a two-year period of supervised release and ordered to pay $2,253,219.84 in restitution to victims. He will begin serving the sentence on January 9, 2027.
Acharya was charged on September 5, 2025, and pleaded guilty on January 6, 2026, to wire fraud and to engaging in a monetary transaction with property derived from fraud. According to the plea agreement, SiliconSage was a vertically integrated development and construction company behind numerous large, multi-unit, mixed-use real estate projects in the Bay Area, and Acharya personally solicited investments to fund those projects. From March 2020 to October 26, 2020, while SiliconSage was in significant debt and struggling with serious cash flow shortfalls, in part due to COVID-19, Acharya deceived investors by not telling them about the company's true financial situation. More than 20 investors lost more than $2.2 million as a result of the fraud.
'Financial difficulties are never an excuse to deceive investors,' said United States Attorney Craig H. Missakian. John Abram, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) San Francisco Field Office, said financial fraud puts individuals' and families' retirement plans, educational opportunities, and financial security at risk.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Christiaan Highsmith is prosecuting the case. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by IRS-CI.
