Modest Needs Founder Keith Taylor Sentenced to Eight Years for Stealing Over $2.5 Million in Donations, Ordered to Forfeit $3,118,237
NEW YORK — Keith Taylor, the founder and former chief executive officer of the Modest Needs Foundation, was sentenced to eight years in prison by U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Rochon for stealing more than $2.5 million in donations and evading more than $1 million in federal income taxes, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York announced. Taylor, 59, of New York, New York, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $3,118,237 in forfeiture and $4,144,645 in restitution. He had previously pleaded guilty on August 18, 2025.
Taylor founded Modest Needs in 2002 as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that used a crowd-sourcing model to help low-income workers pay for unexpected expenses such as medical bills or broken appliances, providing short-term financial assistance to individuals and families living paycheck to paycheck. According to the superseding indictment, the complaint, and court filings, since at least 2015 Taylor embezzled more than $2.5 million from the charity and its donors to fund lavish personal spending: more than $320,000 at New York City restaurants and steakhouses, sometimes dining twice a day; more than $100,000 to food delivery services; more than $300,000 in donated funds toward rent for a luxury apartment on the 30th floor of a midtown Manhattan skyscraper; and more than $270,000 of charity funds placed directly into his personal brokerage account, alongside expensive electronics, medical expenses, and other personal bills paid from the charity's bank accounts.
Taylor hid the embezzlement by creating a fake board of directors, falsely listing acquaintances — a bartender, a friend, and his house-cleaner — on the charity's tax forms and website as board members who had supposedly approved his spending and provided oversight; none of them ever attended a board meeting or even knew they had been listed. He continued to defraud the charity even after his arrest in June 2024, using its funds for meals, medical expenses, and rent in violation of his pretrial release conditions despite having purportedly resigned and lost access to its accounts. For at least the calendar years 2017 through 2024, he did not file personal income tax returns or pay income taxes on the millions he received from the charity, evading more than $1 million in federal income taxes.
"Keith Taylor embezzled millions from a charity for low-income families to pay for his own lavish lifestyle," said U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald. "Taylor's embezzlement and tax evasion not only violated the law but shattered the trust of those who believed in the mission of the charity, denying essential help to vulnerable individuals and families in genuine need." The case was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation and the Special Agents of the U.S. Attorney's Office and is being handled by the Office's Public Corruption Unit, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Eli J. Mark, Rebecca R. Delfiner, and James G. Mandilk in charge of the prosecution.
