Denver Wild Horse Photography Exhibition Draws Attention on October 28, Tracing Mustangs from Life on the Range to After the Roundup
A wild horse photography exhibition at a Denver gallery drew attention on October 28. The show traces Colorado mustangs from their free-roaming lives on public lands to their little-known fates after being rounded up and removed. It runs from October 22 to November 15 at Denver's D'art Gallery and features work shot between 2021 and 2026 by Colorado conservation photographer Scott Wilson.
Wilson has photographed wild horses for nearly a decade and has documented roundups since 2021. His lens starts before the roundups, showing herd family bonds and life in the wild, then follows the horses through what happens after removal. In August 2026, he photographed a federal helicopter roundup in the Piceance Basin near Meeker and Rangely, Colorado.
After his related reporting was published by the animal photojournalism platform We Animals, five members of Congress, the governor of Colorado and 23 state legislators wrote to the Bureau of Land Management asking for the roundups to be paused.
The exhibition will also host an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. on November 13, bringing together photography, animal protection, policy and education, and inviting viewers to consider how public land management decisions affect each individual horse.
