Parks Canada Opens Call for Up to $2 Million in Heritage Places Cost-Sharing, Covering Up to Half of Eligible Costs

Parks Canada announced in Gatineau, Quebec, on October 27 that the federal government has launched the call for proposals for the National Cost-Sharing Program for Heritage Places. For 2027-28, up to $2 million is available to protect national historic sites, heritage lighthouses and heritage railway stations, with applications due by December 8, 2026.

'Heritage places showcase the defining moments in Canada's history. They reflect stories of who we are, connect us to our past, and enrich our understanding of ourselves, each other, and our country,' said Julie Dabrusin, Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature and Minister responsible for Parks Canada. 'Investments like these do more than preserve heritage buildings. They help strengthen local economies, support jobs, and contribute to a vibrant tourism sector.'

The contribution program reimburses up to 50% of eligible costs for the conservation and presentation of heritage places that are formally recognized but not administered by the federal government. Special consideration will be given to projects that represent the diversity and complexity of Canadian history, protect and present places of national historic significance, highlight climate resilience and advance accessibility.

For 2026-27 the program awarded $2.9 million supporting 21 projects across the country. One example is the conservation of the lantern room at Boar's Head Lighthouse in Tiverton, Nova Scotia, where Parks Canada contributed $17,752 toward repairs that ensure the long-term preservation of the lighthouse in its coastal setting.
