Oregon: New Opioid Treatment Center Opens in Gresham on October 27 as State Adds 1,722 Residential Treatment Beds
A new opioid treatment program, the New Season Treatment Center in Gresham, in Multnomah County, Oregon, held its grand opening on October 27, with Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and Gresham Mayor Travis Stovall attending the ribbon-cutting. The state helped fund New Season's expansion into Gresham. The opening is part of a broader expansion of Oregon's behavioral health system: the state anticipates adding 1,722 licensed residential treatment beds, including 769 substance use disorder treatment beds.
'We want people to have health care and support where they need it,' Kotek said. 'This program will change lives - the more we get services to all parts of the state, the better off we are.' She added that an open door is not enough on its own and that trained people are needed to work in clinics like this one. Gresham, in eastern Multnomah County, is a major city in the Portland metropolitan area, and the new center will provide medication-assisted treatment and related services close to home for area residents.
According to the governor's office, of the 1,722 beds being added statewide, 1,052 are already open and serving Oregonians, with 670 additional beds scheduled to open in the next two and a half years, a more than 61% increase in capacity. Prior to 2022, Oregon relied largely on limited, project-specific investments or external private-sector funding to expand behavioral health capacity; under Kotek, the state and the Legislature have funded increased capacity at a statewide scale. Alongside the expansion, the state is addressing the behavioral health workforce shortage: the Governor's Behavioral Health Talent Council, led by First Lady Aimee Kotek, met with frontline providers, people with lived experience and leaders across the state and produced a comprehensive report now guiding the state's next steps.
