Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 26-222 in Tallahassee on October 27, designating 'Seminole Wind' by John Anderson, the Country Music Hall of Fame singer from Apopka in Orange County, Florida, as Florida's Anthem. Anderson died on October 21 at age 71. The order credits the 1992 song with positively influencing a generational investment in protecting Florida's heritage, natural environment and way of life, resulting in the expedited restoration of America's Everglades.
'Today I issued an Executive Order designating "Seminole Wind" by John Anderson as the official anthem of Florida,' DeSantis said. 'I have also directed the Secretary of State to erect historic markers in the City of Apopka depicting John Anderson's contribution to Florida's heritage. In addition, I have tasked the Department of Environmental Protection to work with the St. Johns River Water Management District to designate the wildlife drive and trail system within the Lake Apopka North Shore as the John Anderson Wildlife Drive and Trail System.' The order directs the Secretary of State to take all necessary steps to provide for awareness of the designation within the State Capitol and to erect the historic markers in Apopka.
The order also encourages the incoming Legislature to codify 'Seminole Wind' in chapter 15, Florida Statutes, to make the designation permanent. DeSantis made clear the designation is separate from the state's existing State Anthem designation, which he said has had little to no use since its establishment. Anderson, a Florida-born member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, built one of country music's most distinctive bodies of work over nearly five decades, and 'Seminole Wind' is played at Florida State University home football games at Doak Campbell Stadium.
