GSM News

National Laboratory of the Rockies

DOE Unveils National Battery Strategy: Fully Integrated Domestic Supply Chain by 2030, With Battery Manufacturing Accelerator Launched

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on October 28 announced its national battery strategy, the Strategy for American Leadership in Batteries, through the Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation (CMEI). The strategy sets priorities to build a fully integrated domestic battery supply chain by 2030, achieve U.S. leadership in battery technology and manufacturing by 2035, and accelerate the commercialization of safe, affordable, and reliable energy-storage solutions. DOE also launched the Battery Manufacturing Accelerator (BattMan), a national consortium to advance its battery manufacturing priorities.

U.S. battery demand across transportation and energy-storage applications is projected to nearly quadruple, from 179 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2025 to 707 GWh in 2035. The strategy identifies six pillars: targeting investments in the upstream and midstream supply chain; accelerating commercial deployment of laboratory discoveries; prioritizing manufacturing process innovation; targeting mission-driven deployment for grid modernization; coordinating on the national strategy with international partners; and investing in American talent.

"From transportation and power grids to medical devices and consumer electronics, batteries are essential to modern life," said Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson. "DOE's national strategy demonstrates the Trump Administration's commitment to accelerating American battery innovation, onshoring manufacturing, and securing the supply chains we need to power our economy and maintain American energy dominance."

The Battery Manufacturing Accelerator consortium is led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and includes Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the National Laboratory of the Rockies, along with industrial and academic partners; it is supported by CMEI's Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office. The consortium aims to develop self-optimizing manufacturing systems that combine real-time process monitoring, Super Intelligence (SI), digital twins, and closed-loop control to reduce manufacturing costs and shorten the time required to bring new battery technologies to market. It will also strengthen critical mineral supply chains by advancing battery materials made from more abundant domestic elements. Organizations interested in collaborating can visit the BattMan website.
