Raleigh to Install Turn-Calming Wedges in Glenwood South This November, Followed by Six-Month Observation
In Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, the city's transportation department announced that its Glenwood South Safety Pilot will begin installing turn-calming wedges at intersections along Glenwood Avenue in November 2026 to slow turning vehicles and protect pedestrians. Once the wedges are in, Phase 1 of the pilot enters a six-month observation period, with an online survey to collect community feedback.
The pilot grew out of a January 2025 community survey: of more than 750 participants, over 90 percent said they walk while in Glenwood South, making walking the district's top travel mode. The highest-ranked improvements were hardscape measures such as raised crosswalks and raised intersections, along with better pedestrian visibility and lower vehicle speeds.
Turn-calming wedges are mountable rubber wedges with a black-and-white pattern and reflectors, drilled into the roadway. They tighten the turning radius for standard vehicles, forcing drivers to slow down, while still allowing large trucks to complete turns. The city says the treatment is new to Raleigh.
In November 2025 the city piloted flexible delineator posts inside the painted curb extensions, but within a month most posts had been struck, dislodged or lost, prompting the switch to the more durable wedges. Phase 1 also includes painted curb extensions at all intersections, expected to be complete in fall 2026; Phase 2 will study raised crosswalks on the west side of each intersection. Parking is largely unaffected, apart from removal of a loading zone at the southeast corner of Glenwood Avenue and West North Street and a 20-foot eastward shift of the valet zone at Tucker Street.
