Riverside County, California Recruits Volunteers for Homeless Point-in-Time Count After 2025 Census Found 3,990 Chronically Unsheltered
Riverside County, California: Riverside County is recruiting volunteers for its countywide point-in-time canvass of people experiencing homelessness, the county announced on October 27. The count helps determine how federal homeless assistance funding is distributed.
The county said the 2025 census confirmed 3,990 people were chronically unsheltered in Riverside County, up from 3,725 in the 2023 survey, a 7% increase. The data is used by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to distribute federal homeless relief funding, and by policymakers to gauge the scope of homelessness and what is working. "Our cities are essential partners in this work," said Board of Supervisors Chair Karen Spiegel, citing dedicated city staff who coordinate regional homeless services and public safety personnel who work alongside volunteers in the field.
No experience with point-in-time counts is necessary, but training is required; volunteers as young as 16 may take part if accompanied by an adult. Volunteers must have a smartphone or tablet to conduct the survey and be able to walk up to two hours. Registration is open at rivcohws.org/homeless-point-time-pit-count.
