Orange County, California: Flooding from the ongoing king tides forced Caltrans to close both directions of Pacific Coast Highway between Warner Avenue and Seal Beach Boulevard on Tuesday morning, October 27, with northbound lanes also closed between Seapoint Street and Warner Avenue. As water kept spilling across the roadway even after the tide receded, the closure was extended to both directions between Seal Beach and Huntington Beach.
In Newport Beach, the morning tide peaked at a record-setting 8.4 feet at 10 a.m. The city activated pumps and reinforced sand berms around vulnerable neighborhoods, particularly along the Balboa Peninsula. The waterway beneath the Newport Boulevard Bridge was closed from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to keep boat wakes from pushing water into nearby properties, and will close again Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Parking enforcement was suspended through Wednesday evening so residents could move vehicles out of flood-prone areas. In Huntington Beach, which had pre-announced a closure window from 8 a.m. to noon, flooding was reported around Huntington Harbour and Bayview Drive.
The National Weather Service expects very high morning tides through Thursday; as GSM reported earlier, the coastal flood warning runs through 1 p.m. Thursday and Metrolink's Orange County Line suspension between Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside continues through Friday. The weather service also noted that a San Pedro tide gauge in Los Angeles County reached 8.02 feet on Monday, breaking the previous record of 7.93 feet set on January 10, 2005; records at the gauge date to November 1923.
