US Consumer Confidence Index Rose 7.5 Points to 91.7 in October, Rebounding to June Levels, Conference Board Says
The Conference Board said on October 27 that its Consumer Confidence Index rose 7.5 points to 91.7 (1985=100) in October, rebounding to June levels, after September was revised slightly upward to 84.2. The preliminary results cover a survey period of October 1-21, conducted online by Toluna.
Both components improved. The Present Situation Index climbed 8.6 points to 120.4, with 26.7% of consumers saying jobs were plentiful, up from 24.3% in September, while 21.4% said jobs were hard to get, unchanged. The Expectations Index recovered 6.9 points to 72.6, only partially reversing three consecutive monthly declines. Some 18.7% of consumers expected their income to increase, while those expecting a decrease fell to 12.0% from 14.9%.
Fergus McCormick, Senior Economist for Global Indicators at The Conference Board, said confidence advanced in October driven primarily by improved perceptions of current and expected business conditions, in line with retail gasoline prices easing from September to October. He cautioned that confidence remained on a long-term downward trend, with consumers planning less spending on services and durable goods over the next six months, reflecting higher prices and persistent inflation eroding purchasing power.
Consumers' average 12-month inflation expectations declined to 5.8% but remained elevated. Vacation plans dipped, with 43.3% of consumers planning a vacation in the next six months, down 0.9 percentage points from September, as more planned domestic trips and fewer planned foreign trips. On a six-month moving average basis, plans to purchase autos and homes both declined slightly.
