Grizzlies Beat Jazz 110-105 for Fourth Straight Win to Open Season: Ty Jerome Scores 8 of His 15 in Final Six Minutes as Utah Loses Two Starters
The Memphis Grizzlies beat the Utah Jazz 110-105 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Monday night, October 26, winning their fourth straight game to open the season for only the second time in franchise history, according to Reuters. Grizzlies guard Ty Jerome scored eight of his 15 points in the final six minutes, including two clutch free throws with 11.6 seconds remaining.
Memphis got balanced scoring: Cedric Coward had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Jaylen Wells added 14 points, and Cam Boozer and Jerami Grant each scored 13. The Grizzlies never trailed after taking the lead midway through the first quarter, built a 15-point lead at 45-30 in the second quarter and led 58-52 at halftime. Utah trimmed the lead to one at 58-57 early in the third on a three-point play by George, but Memphis gradually extended the margin to 10 late in the third and led by 13 entering the fourth.
For Utah, Keyonte George scored a game-high 26 points, Ace Bailey contributed 17 points and 10 boards, and Mo Bamba added 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Utah lost two starters in the first half: former Grizzlies star Jaren Jackson Jr. injured his right knee in the second quarter and did not return, and Lauri Markkanen injured his right wrist early in the first quarter. The Jazz rallied in the fourth to trim the deficit to one on two occasions, the last with 1:01 remaining on a shot by Bamba; two free throws by Wells with 41 seconds left put Memphis ahead 108-105 before Jerome sank two more with 11.6 seconds to go.
Memphis returns to action on October 29 on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers, its first meeting with former franchise star Ja Morant since his offseason trade.
