U.S. Department of Transportation Awards Nearly $105 Million to Six Alaska Port Projects: Whittier Dock Replacement Leads at $50.6 Million
The U.S. Department of Transportation, through the Maritime Administration's Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP), has awarded nearly $105 million to six port and maritime infrastructure projects across Alaska. U.S. Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski and Congressman Nick Begich announced the awards in Anchorage on October 27. The investments will support modernization and expansion of ports, harbors and docks serving communities from Southeast Alaska to the Aleutians and the Arctic.
The six projects are: $50,593,488 for the DeLong Dock Replacement Project in Whittier, replacing aging maritime infrastructure serving Southcentral Alaska's transportation network and regional supply chains; $26,070,000 for Phase 2A of the Saint Herman Harbor Recapitalization Project in Kodiak, a vital facility for the commercial fishing fleet; $11,250,000 for local service facilities at Nome's Arctic Deep-Draft Port, strengthening maritime access, commerce, emergency response and national security; $6,394,000 for stevedore support facilities under the Port of Alaska Modernization Program in Anchorage; $6,287,220 for the Kake Marine Cargo Dock Development Project; and $4,402,403 for the Ounalashka Arctic and North Pacific Maritime Hub in Unalaska, supporting commercial fisheries, shipping and Arctic maritime operations. The six awards total $104,997,111.
Sullivan said Alaska has more coastline than the rest of the country combined and that its ports and harbors are lifelines for its communities, economy and national security. Begich said the investments, from modernizing Kodiak's St. Herman Harbor to expanding Nome's deep-draft port capabilities, will support Alaska's commercial fishing sector, maritime security, and transportation and supply chain networks.
