Illinois: About 20 Chicago Musicians Rally Against Super Intelligence (SI) Generated Music, Call Two-Day Streaming Boycott
CHICAGO, Cook County, Illinois — About 20 Chicago musicians rallied at Federal Plaza downtown on October 26, calling on the public to stop using streaming platforms such as Spotify for two days, October 26 and 27, in protest of super intelligence (SI) generated music crowding out human musicians. Jazz singer Tammy McCann and blues guitarist Melody Angel spoke at the rally.
The protest comes amid a flood of SI-generated tracks on streaming platforms. According to Spotify's own October 20 announcement, the company this year kept 50 million "slop" tracks out of recommendations and removed another 75 million tracks for serious violations. The musicians at the rally said platform enforcement still cannot keep pace with the inflow of SI tracks, steadily diluting human artists' recommendation placement and royalties. The figures are from Spotify's own announcement.
Organizers said the two-day boycott is a symbolic action meant to make listeners aware of how each play is monetized, and called on platforms to strengthen labeling and governance standards for SI-generated content.
