Hawaii: Kahului Harbor on Maui Wins a $40,146,750 Federal Grant for a $56.1 Million Cargo Yard Expansion
MAUI COUNTY, Hawaii — The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on October 27 that Kahului Harbor has received a $40,146,750 grant from the federal Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) for a cargo yard expansion. The project's total cost is about $56.1 million, with the balance of roughly $16 million covered by the state harbor special fund.
Kahului Harbor is Maui's only commercial port, and most of the island's consumer goods and building materials pass through it. The department said reconstruction materials flowing in after the Lahaina fire have strained the existing yard, and the expansion will raise the port's cargo-handling capacity.
The grant is part of the federal government's annual support for state port infrastructure. The project will move into design and construction phases, with a schedule to be announced by the department.
