Senate Candidate Roy Cooper Campaigns in Charlotte on Oct. 27, Stressing Affordability and "People Before Politics"

Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina — Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and former governor Roy Cooper addressed a small group of voters on the morning of Oct. 27 at Little Rock AME Zion Church in uptown Charlotte, laying out his plans to make life more affordable for families if elected.

Cooper said he would work with President Donald Trump where possible but would also stand up to the president — or to fellow Democrats — when he disagrees. Addressing concerns among conservative independents and Republican voters about Democrats holding a Senate majority, Cooper stressed that he would put voters first: "I will put the people first — people before politics, people before party, people before power."

Cooper's opponent is Republican candidate Michael Whatley, and polls show Cooper leading by as much as 13 percentage points. Cooper also urged voters who have not yet cast ballots to do so soon: more than 1.7 million North Carolinians have voted since early voting began on Oct. 15. Early voting ends Oct. 31, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
