Harris County Voter Roll Cancellations Surge After Delayed Cleanup; Houston Voters Urged to Check Registration Before Voting

Houston, Harris County, Texas — The number of voter registration cancellations in Harris County has surged after a delayed cleanup of the voter rolls, according to a report updated on October 27, and Houston's Chinese voters are urged to check their registration status before voting to avoid discovering a problem at the polling place.

The report, citing the county voter registrar's office, said the increase is partly due to roll maintenance delayed by back-to-back elections and caught up after this year's March primary, as well as investigations involving the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database. Cancellations recorded as "investigative" from January to July 2026 reached 7,942, more than triple the 2,530 in the same period of 2025 and the highest for that period since 2014. The registrar's office said no voter was wrongly canceled because of a SAVE flag; the SAVE system flagged 2,724 people statewide.

Voters can check "Am I Registered" at VoteTexas.gov. Anyone who arrives at a polling place and finds they are not on the rolls may cast a provisional ballot, and election judges can call the county registrar's office to verify registration. Harris County voters who believe they were wrongly canceled can call the registrar's office at 713-274-8683.

Houston's Chinese community includes many newly naturalized voters and recent movers; an outdated registration address or a change in name spelling can affect eligibility, and checking in advance is safer than fixing it on site. Early voting in Harris County runs through October 30, and Election Day is November 3, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Houston Community College's voter guide also provides election protection hotline information in languages including Mandarin and Cantonese.
