Oklahoma City Council Approves City's First Mega Data Center Project 6-3, With the Strictest Zoning Conditions
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma — The Oklahoma City Council voted 6-3 on October 27 to approve Beltline Energy's plan to build the city's first mega data center, with council members James Cooper, JoBeth Hamon and Camal Pennington voting no. Beltline Energy was one of two companies that had filed applications before a one-year moratorium took effect and were therefore allowed to seek zoning approval early. Mayor David Holt cautioned that the approval sets no precedent for other data center projects and asked that the moratorium, set to expire at the end of 2026, be extended by six months. The site lies west of Frisco Road along Interstate 40, with 110 acres north of the highway and 184 acres south of it, and the company has already secured zoning for additional land in Yukon immediately to the west. Ward 3 council member Katrina Avers, whose ward includes the site, championed approval, saying the company had responded at every step on residents' concerns such as noise levels and water and electricity use. The company's attorney called the attached conditions the most restrictive, heavily regulated zoning terms for such a project in the city's history. The council stressed that future data center projects will be judged case by case.
