South Dakota Receives First $9 Million of Meta Settlement: Attorney General Announces in Pierre, Hughes County, State's $52 Million Share to Be Paid Over 10 Years
Pierre, Hughes County, South Dakota, October 27 — Attorney General Marty Jackley announced that South Dakota has received the first $9 million from Meta Platforms, Inc. under a settlement. The payment is part of South Dakota's $52 million share of the settlement, to be paid over the next 10 years, and the state's share could grow to as much as $73,480,057 if certain conditions are met. Jackley said the settlement established a national standard to protect young people online and to empower parents, that the state legislature now has the opportunity to decide how to use the funds, and he urged it to focus on improving and strengthening education in South Dakota. The state's share will be placed in the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Fund until the legislature decides how to allocate it. The case was brought by the attorneys general of 42 states, including South Dakota, who sued Meta alleging the company designed its platforms with addictive features knowing they would cause serious mental harm to young users. The settlement also requires Meta to implement a series of safety features on Instagram and Facebook to improve children's online safety. Now that the first funds have arrived, when the legislature takes up an allocation plan will be the next focus.
