Getty's Making of a Medieval Manuscript Rotates November 24: Ethiopian and Armenian Bibles Replace the Rothschild Pentateuch
The J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, has announced a second rotation of objects for its exhibition The Making of a Medieval Manuscript, starting November 24: an Ethiopian Bible from around 1500 and a 17th-century Armenian Bible will replace the Rothschild Pentateuch currently on view. The exhibition opened August 4 and runs through March 14, 2027.
According to the Getty, the exhibition explores the craft of medieval bookmaking in detail, from the preparation of parchment and the methods of illumination to the assembly of the codex, with manuscripts, tempera colors, gold leaf and ink on view. Museum director Timothy Potts has said that revealing the intricate process behind these masterpieces gives visitors a sense of the extraordinary skill that went into producing books by hand in the Middle Ages.
The incoming Ethiopian manuscript uses vermilion partly derived from opium and indigo, but no gold leaf, in contrast to European illuminated manuscripts. Admission to the Getty Center is free with a timed reservation; exhibition details are at getty.edu.
