Trump Hosts Cyber Crime Roundtable: Says Americans Lost Over $20 Billion to Cybercrime in 2025
President Donald Trump hosted a roundtable on protecting American families from cybercrime at the White House on October 21, joined by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, FBI Director Kash Patel, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Todd Blanche. The White House released video of the roundtable on its website and official channel on October 25.
Trump said Americans lost more than $20 billion in 2025 to cybercrime, including impersonation schemes, ransomware attacks and overseas scam centers. He said that since his March executive order directing the Justice Department to prioritize online scammers, federal agencies have frozen about $1 billion in "cybercurrency" tied to foreign scammers and prevented about $1.6 billion in losses.
Display boards at the event listed enforcement results including 503 fraudulent websites dismantled and more than $938 million in criminal cryptocurrency restrained. Before the event, a White House official told reporters that law enforcement had notified nearly 9,000 Americans who were being targeted by scammers.
FBI figures show Americans filed more than one million internet crime complaints last year, up 17 percent from 2024, and reported $11 billion in losses from digital-asset scams alone in 2025. Last November the Treasury Department formed a multi-agency Scam Center Strike Force targeting "pig butchering" operations run from Burma, Cambodia, Laos and the Philippines.
